University of Lincoln Freshers’ welcome

Lack of exposure was a major problem identified to me as to why students don’t participate in careers events, despite the careers centre getting its own brand new multi-million pound building.

Situated opposite one of the largest student accommodation halls and adjacent to the Student Union, it seemed students walked right by not taking the time to venture inside.

I saw Freshers’ Week as an ideal time to attract some attention to the building and decided a BBQ held on the riverside patio area offering free food and drink was the best way.

I managed to piggy-back on the Student Union’s marketing by getting the event listed on their Freshers’ Week calendar so every single new student would know about it.

After a battle with the health and safety department I managed to get approval, not without a heap of paperwork, for a local butchers to run the BBQ.

Over 500 people turned up and the entire department was on hand to promote what services are on offer at Enterprise@Lincoln. This was a fantastic result which attracted ten times more interest than the building’s opening and undoubtedly raised the student perception of the careers service.
